Count Your Blessings
MTCD wishes you season’s greetings and happy “holy daze,” as Mary Margaret O’Hara calls it.
20 years ago, the seasonal music album Count Your Blessings was released on compact disc. I used to see it all the time at Sam The Record Man, and was really enchanted by the idea of Jane Siberry, Rebecca Jenkins, Holly Cole, Victoria Williams and Mary Margaret O’Hara singing live together. It was on the list of purchases I planned to make, but the cd went out of print not too long afterwards, and I’ve been looking for a hard copy ever since.
Flash forward to December 14, 2014. The illustrious Mary Margaret O’Hara performed a rare and delightful live show of Christmas songs, at the Imperial Pub in Toronto, Canada, a mere two blocks from where I live. A couple of hours before that show, I was thinking about that live album from 1994. Perusing iTunes, I saw that it was there, and used an iTunes gift card given to me as a birthday present by my brother and his family to download it. I’m glad I did. It’s a beautiful recording of what sounds like a magical night had by all. Are you Burning Little Candle is one of Jane Siberry’s finest compositions, and should be considered a standard, in my humble opinion. MMO’s rendition of Silent Night is ethereal in its grace. Listening to Count Your Blessings, and reflecting on the year I have had, I did just that. I counted mine.
A couple of hours later, I was at the MMO Christmas show (ho ho ho) when, midway through her first set, between songs, I sneezed. “God bless you,” said Mary Margaret from stage. And I got to count one more blessing that night.
With that I wish you all the best to you and yours. Blessings and good tidings today and every day.
Thanks to Paula Geraldo for inspiring my holiday greeting.
