Devoted To You ( Boudleaux Bryant Everly Brothers Cover ) 05.08.10

This was done as a Mother’s Day present for my Mom.

My parents introduced me to The Everly Brothers. Their favourite ballad was (All You Have To Do Is) Dream, and while that song is a masterpiece in every way, Devoted To You was always my favourite Everly Brothers song. It’s hard to choose favourites with their work.

One can’t underestimate the tremolo guitar work of Chet Atkins. That unmistakable sound helped define those early Everly Brothers records.

Wikipedia states that this song was written by husband and wife songwriting team Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, but my 1985 Rhino Everly Brothers cd compilation cites this song as a solo Boudleaux Bryant composition.

Brian Wilson and Mike Love did a beautiful version of this song on the Beach Boys Party! album from 1965. An beautiful alternate mix without the hoots and hollers can be found on the 2001 Capitol Records compilation, Hawthorne California.

I’ll admit this song does work better with two lead singers singing both melodies. One could argue that one line is the melody and one is the harmony, but both parts are equally strong and could be sung apart from the other and the song would still hold up. In this interpretation, I chose to sing the higher part sung by Phil Everly.

I’m just using the tiny camera mic to capture everything. I think it’s time for me to start recording things at a higher tech level, ugh, lol.
